Ontario Launches Used Tire Recycling Program |
| Posted by Administrator (admin) on Oct 01 2009 at 9:31 AM |
Ontario launched its Used Tire Recycling Program on Sept. 1. The Program requires tire manufacturers to take cradle-to-cradle responsibility for tires by paying upfront for the cost of having used tires recycled. Up to 4 used tires can be taken to registered collection sites in Thunder Bay and across the Province at no cost. The Program includes a comprehensive auditing process to track what happens to the tires once they've been collected. Incentives are provided to encourage the highest and best use of recycled tires. For example, there is no incentive for tires to be used for energy, but high incentives for turning recycled tires into car parts etc. Extended Producer Responsibility Programs are a key elelment of the Zero Waste concept and the ZWATeam congratulates the Ontario Government for implementing both the E-Waste and Tire Recycling EPR Programs. Similar programs for most other materials in the waste stream will move Ontario towards its goal of Zero Waste.
