2008 Municipal Green Awards Presented by Council

The Municipal Green Award is a joint venture between the City of Thunder Bay and the Zero Waste Action Team. This incentive program is open to individuals, businesses and organizations in the City of Thunder Bay. Applicants are required to set a specific goal to reduce/divert waste and/or improve the management of resources such as energy and water. The Municipal Green Award Committee oversees the program and makes recommendations to Council regarding the successful applicants. Mayor Peterson and ZWATeam Chair Patrick Fenlon presented Municipal Green Awards to six successful applicants at the March 2 Council Meeting.

Bombardier Transportation met its goals to reduce water consumptions by 3%; CO2 equivalent emissions by 9.6%; general waste by 3% (per 200,000 hrs) and hazardous wastes by 5% (per 200,000 hrs). Bombardier is installing a solar wall and has eliminated chemical tanks, upgraded lighting in offices and buildings and continues to actively promote recycling within their operations. Bombardier also involves employees in looking for environmental initiatives and offer gift cards for successful suggestions.

Cargill Limited met its goals to inform their employees about the hazards of mercury on the environment and identified materials containing mercury. It provided employees with education about the safe handling and disposal of materials containing mercury at work and at home. Cargill extended proper mercury disposal options to employees for their household items that contain mercury. To date, Cargill has disposed of 569 alkaline batteries and 271 fluorescent and metal halide bulbs.

Confederation College is undergoing an extensive retrofit of most of the main campus buildings in Thunder Bay and Kenora. Ongoing initiatives include installation of motion sensors and photocells, upgrades to the environmental controls, sealing of the building envelop, implementation of an equipment shutdown strategy, more efficient equipment and lighting etc. The College is the first Canadian post secondary institute to join the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment to move towards carbon neutrality.

Quality

Market-Centennial Square
reduced electricity demand by 24.7% in the first seven months and natural gas costs by 31.8% in the first four months of their energy efficiency initiatives. This is in addition to the ongoing recycling and waste diversion programs in place at Quality Market stores such as the promotion of reusable bags, and the recycling of plastic wrap, plastic shopping bags and cardboard. Quality Market donates reusable shopping bags to local charities and provides incentives for the use of reusable bags.

Take a Hike provided eco-friendly products and choices and raised staff, customers and suppliers’ awareness about environmental issues. It reduced its consumption of electricity, fossil fuels, harmful chemicals and non-recyclable products and reused and recycled products whenever possible to divert waste from the landfill site. It kept neighbouring streets clean and green and employees were offered a financial incentive to walk, cycle or take the bus to work. Take a Hike plans to continue implementing more initiatives each year.

Waverley Park Towers surpassed its goal to reduce its waste by 50% in 2008.   A Recycling Committee was created to work with the City to implement a waste reduction/recycling program. An open house was held for residents to ask questions and receive orientation on the program. The Committee provided articles in the Condominium’s monthly newsletter and monitored the program. The Committee donated the returns for wine and spirit bottles collected through the program to the Christmas Cheer Fund.

Congratulations to the MGA recipients for your commitment to making Thunder Bay a healthy, clean and green community! The 2009 Municipal Green Award Application may be downloaded from the ZWATeam Website www.zwat.org. Applications must be submitted by May 1, 2009.
