The 2007 Municipal Green Awards were presented to Dawson Properties, the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital and Mascarin Collision Centre by Mayor Peterson and ZWATeam Chair Lynn Duffield at the February 4 City Council Meeting. Congratulations to our 2007 winners! Dawson Properties Ltd achieved its goal to introduce recycling in all 18 of their multi-residential properties. (700+apartments) Dawson Properties built recycling sheds and purchased 1000 recycling baskets to promote recycling as a longterm commitment. They continues to work with the City and Recool to build upon education strategies and increase awareness for recycling in order to maximize waste diversion. The Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre has won a Municipal Green Award two years in a row! This year it achieved its goal to reduce the volumes of waste sent to landfill by 10% based on their 2006 totals as well as reduced energy use. A new dish room was installed, and reusables were introduced in the Cafeteria. The feasilbility of biodegradables take-out containers is being investigated. The TBRHSC also participated in MEMO, an initiative that sends unneeded and replaced equipment to third world countries around the world. Mascarin Collision Centre achieved its goal to reduce VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions by 70% and increase the diversion of scrap metal within their operations. It is the first Green Collision Facility in NorthWestern Ontario. The Centre also diverts cardboard, scrap metal and hazardous wastes generated within their operations.
