3Rs Regulations

Ontario enacted 3Rs Waste Regulations in 1994 requiring designated members of the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional Sector to complete annual waste audits and work plans to reduce waste. In 2008, the Province hired ten new inspectors to allow for expansion of the enforcement of the Regulations. Members of the IC&I sector affected by these Regulations include:

  • Retail Shopping Establishments & Retail Shopping Complexes

  • Large Construction and Demolition Projects

  • Office Buildings of at least 10,000 sq. metres of office space floor area

  • Hotels/motels and restaurants including take out restaurants

  • A, B or F Hospitals

  • Educational Institutions with more than 350 students over the calendar year

  • Industry
